Shopping For Your Dream Home: sizing up the Short Hills, NJ real estate market

Interested in Short Hills, NJ real estate? When shopping around for a home, there are so many things to consider, that it can be quite overwhelming. From school districts to counter tops, it's probably a good idea to make a detailed outline of the features you're looking for in a home so that you can quickly and effectively sift through your options for Short Hills, NJ real estate.

The Short Hills, NJ real estate that is right for you may not be the Short Hills, NJ real estate that is right for another person. A retired couple who often entertains guests is not going to be in the market for the same home of a newly married couple with a baby on the way! Luckily, there is lots of Short Hills, NJ real estate property out there and if you look long and hard, you will find your dream home.

There may not be a purchase more personal than that of a home, so it's important that you know when to settle and when not to. What features are most important to you? What features can be sacrificed? First off, go ahead and make your ideal wish list for a home. Don't hold back; this is your chance to really decide what you want from your slice of Short Hills, NJ real estate.

But remember that a wish list isn't always a realistic list. Once you look over your finances, you can begin to narrow this list down. Start prioritizing what you desire in a home. This will make it a lot easier to find the Short Hills, NJ real estate that is perfect for you and your loved ones.

Here is a list, a shopping list per say, of what to think about before you decide upon the specific Short Hills, NJ real estate property for you. When touring a home, you need to have notes on hand so that you can ask the right questions.

There are of course the basic elements: number of bedrooms and bathrooms, whether or not pets are allowed, etc. But then there are the hidden details and these are what really destroy the charm of moving into a new home if you overlook them. For instance:

* What is the condition of the walls and the roof?

* Is there noisy traffic nearby? (While it's comforting to be located close to a hospital or a police station, do you want to hear sirens all the time?)

* Where are the local shopping centers and schools located? Is your work close by?

* Is the school district rated highly?

* Is public transportation an option in this neighborhood?

* What are the utility costs?

* Where do you get your mail?

* When does the trash get picked up - is their enforced recycling?

* What are the crime rates in the area?

* How's the paint job on the exterior of the house? Is their peeling? Stains? (Look behind bushes and in the nooks and crannies of the house to really find out the answer to this.)

* Windows are some of the most revealing parts of a house. If they don't open or close easily, the home may have foundation problems. Soft and soggy and/or stained window sills may point to water problems.

* Is your home made of wood? If so, don't just consider how good or bad it "looks" - that means virtually nothing in the long run. It's better to trust your sense of touch more than anything; poke the wood with your fingers. Soft areas may indicate rotting! If the wood instead just crumbles and falls off, you may have a termite problem.

* If the price of the home is more than 20% greater than the prices of other homes in the neighborhood, then you are probably paying too much! Keep this in mind as you shop around.

* Will you be entering into a homeowner's association? If so, what rules do you have to abide by?

There are of course still a number of other factors to consider before you can thoroughly browse the Short Hills, NJ real estate market and determine what home is right for you and your budget.

However, asking these questions can help you fully evaluate the Short Hills, NJ real estate property that you're interested in. First impressions can be deceiving and that is especially true when buying a home. Remember that a seller will usually go to all kinds of lengths to get a home off their hands and that may mean a new, rushed paint job and well swept floors - but it may not mean they're selling a well-built, long-lasting home. The devil's in the details, so don't ignore them. Good luck finding the Short Hills, NJ real estate perfect for you!
